Chianti is the most famous wine name in Italy is not the name of a grape but actuallya region.
Chianti is 35 miles of hills between Florence and Siena, a complex geologicalregion as well as geographically.
The extraordinary geography makes viticulture, a gesture very challenging, withmultiple exposures and soil types of the same estate.
The region comprises 9 different municipalities not dissimilar to Bordeaux, whereevery municipality has a particular characteristic that shows in the wine.
The wine is made predominantly Sangiovese, the grape must comprise at least 80%of the mixture.
Chianti Classico is the "classic" in the region, though many other nearby regionsnow use the name "Chianti" to produce similar wines.
The "Gallo Nero" or Black Rooster on many of the bottles of Chianti Classico is aprivate consortium of producers who try to control the direction of production andquality amongst their members.
